The Beginning Principals Institute
Who: Principals in their first or second year as a school leader
Why: Participation in learning with peers from other school systems, will lead to greater success in leading schools that enhance student achievement
How: Beginning principals will participate in a Professional Learning Community to learn strategies and to share ideas for successfully leading a school for enhanced student achievement.
· Participants will study, share, and discuss both practical solutions as well as research on successful schools.
· Individual coaching and discussion sessions will also be a part of the Beginning Principals Institute.
THE INSTITUTE:
Participants will meet monthly, beginning in January and finishing in late June. Research materials, including the work of Marzano, Waters, and McNulty in School Leadership that Works: From Research to Results will be a part of each study session. All participants will be invited to attend the New Principals Celebration, along with their superintendents. The New Principals Celebration is sponsored by the Principals Center and is held at the Carter Center in May as part of this Institute.
At the end of the Institute, we want participants to:
KNOW:
· Characteristics of strong leadership for improving student achievement in schools
· Leadership behaviors that provide leverage
· What it means to be an instructional leader
· Characteristics of effective learning/working teams, such as Professional Learning Communities
· How to manage conflict
· Strategies and methods for addressing learning needs of low-performing students
· How to build and develop a school culture that is conducive to learning of all students and teachers
UNDERSTAND: (Main ideas)
· That certain leadership behaviors have been identified that have a positive correlation with increased student achievement
· That Professional Learning Communities are an important component for both school leaders and principals
· Teaching methods and strategies must change to meet the learning needs of students
· That culture has a strong influence on student learning
· That change is a complex process that cannot be controlled but can be managed
· That relationships within the school are a major factor in student learning
· That family and community involvement and support are crucial to improving student learning
· That all principals have strengths to build on and areas for further professional learning
BE ABLE TO DO:
· Apply research-based leadership strategies for improving student achievement in their own schools
· Collect and analyze various types of school data to determine who is not learning and why
· Develop goals for improvement in their schools based on data
· Participate in a Professional Learning Community and establish these in their schools
· Develop their own areas for improvement and continued learning based on research of “what works”
Cost: $ 700 PC Members $ 800 Non-Members (includes PC Individual membership)
Fee includes:
· monthly group sessions with lunch provided
