PRESENTER Dr. Joseph Murphy is Professor of Education and Associate Dean at the College of Education at Vanderbilt University. In the public schools, he has served as an administrator at the school, district and state levels, including an appointment as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. His most recent appointment was as the Founding President of the Ohio Principals Leadership Academy. He was the founding chair of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC)

His work is in the area of school improvement with special emphasis on leadership and policy. He has published many books and edited others

TOPIC In his morning session, Dr. Murphy will focus on research insites into gaps in achievementby groups of students, the roles of communities and schools, factors that increase or reduce gaps, and successful strategies to reduce the gaps.

BOOK Dr. Murphy's newest book, The Educator's Handboook for Understanding and Closing Achievement Gaps, (Corwin, 2009) will be available for purchase through advance ordering only.

NOTE The afternoon session will be devoted to presentations or discussions on Achievement Gaps in Georgia: Why, When, Where and What we can do about them.
